Vipiteno/Sterzing and environs

VIPITENO/STERZING

Freienfeld: Excursion from Valser Pass /Valser Joch to Trens
Itinerary:

From Valser Pass to Ritzail, follow trail sign no. 10 (Kaspererhof refuge). Continue along the paved road until the junction near the old school taking the old church road (trail sign no. 10). Follow this path into the woods crossing the road once until reaching "Hiusen", at the bottom of the valley, where the paved road continues up to the Leimgruben sign: follow this sign until reaching the Leimer farmstead. Take the junction before the farmstead (Flanes/Flans trail sign) and after passing a bridge go up to the right to the settlement of Flanes (Hallerhof refuge). Continue from along the paved road to the junction for Valgenauna/Valgenäun; below the Knapphof farmstead the road turns to the right and reaches the health path that leads to Maria Trens.

Sterzing: from the mountain station of Roßkopf to Ladurns by the Lotterscharte pass
Itinerary:

Starting from the mountain station of Roßkopf, head toward the Vallming Alpine pasture (trail no. 19 - 19a or 23) and from there, following trail sign no. 34a, go up slightly to the Lotterscharte pass (2.5 h). From the pass a trail (very steep for the first 50 m) descends to the Edelweiß Refuge and the Ladurns Alp. Return to the valley using the chair-lift or following trail no. 34 or 35a. 
Time: 3 h 30 min. 
Degree of difficulty: medium

Gossensaß: Allriß Alpine pasture - Allriß valley 
Itinerary:

From Innerpflersch/S.Anton follow trail sign no. 27, and crossing a moderately steep forest, reach the Allriß Alpine pasture with refuge, that is open in the summer (1,534 m). Continue through the pasture meadows to the Maurer pass in the Allriß valley.

Gossensaß: Ladurns Alp
Itinerary:

From the valley chair-lift station in the Ladurns ski resort areas take trail no. 35/A that at the end joins trail no. 34 and continues to the Ladurns Alp.

Refreshments: Ladurnerhütte Refuge, taverns at Ladurns 

Ratschings: Alta Via of Ridanna
Itinerary:

From the mountain cableway station of Roßkopf trail no. 23 goes to a plateau at about 2000 m and, almost level, to the Ochsen and Prischer Alpine pastures (view over the glaciers of the Western Breonie Alps). From there take trail no. 27 that descends steeply to Masseria/Maiern (bus for return to Sterzing). Or go up from the Prischer Alpine pasture to Cima del Tempo/Wetterspitze, in about 1.5 hours.
Time: 6 h (approx.)
Degree of difficulty: not recommended for anyone who suffers from vertigo and doesn't have a good stride

Ratschings: Gilfenklamm
Itinerary:

One of the real spectacles of nature is the "Gilfenklamm" gorge, a precipice where water crashes along the pure white marble walls and then flows out of the valley. Thanks to the newly built stairways, bridges and parapets, the gorge can be visited from Stanghe.

Holiday area Gitschberg Jochtal

Mühlbach/Meransen: Mountain excursion to Stin alpine pasture - Grande Lake/Seefeldsee
Itinerary:

From Valles/Vals (1,350 m) enter the valley until the Fane parking area. Follow the path marked with trail sign 15 to reach the Stin alpine pasture and then Forcella di Stin/Stinscharte (2,530 m). The trail continues downhill to Grande Lake/Großer Seefeldsee (2,271 m - 3 h 30 min.); then it crosses the Altafossa/Altfaßtal valley up to the Sägenkreuz cross and continues along the path marked with trail sign 10 until the fork of the Leitensteig path which leads to Valles (2 h 30 min.).
Time: 6 h
Height difference: 1.200 m approx.

Vintl/Pfunderertal: Excursion to the summit Cima di Terento/Eidechsenspitze (2.738 m) 
Itinerary:

Starting from the parking area in Val di Rio Vena/Winnebachtal, near Terento, cross the Rio Vena valley and go up to the Engelalm alpine pasture (1,826 m) and to Cima di Terento (2,738 m), following the rhododendron path. Return to the starting point passing the Campofosso/Kompfoß Lake (2,442 m) and the Pausa Lake/Tiefrastenhütte Refuge (2,303 m).
Time: 6 - 7 h approx. 
Height difference: 1.200 m
Degree of difficulty: demanding

Meransen: to the lakes of Seefeld
Itinerary:

From the mountain cable-way station (2059 m) through mountain pastures to the Zaßler Refuge and the Ochsenboden Alpine pasture (2198 m; time: 45 min.). From here trail no. 6, that in some points is somewhat exposed but full of panoramic points, flanks Mt. Val di Mezzo/Fallmetzer (2568 m) to the Campolago/Seefeld Alpine pasture (2340 m; time 1 h 15 min.) and from there to Lake Grande. Then, by trail 14/15, that descends steeply to the Wieserhütte Refuge (rest area) and to the Pranter-Stadel (1850 m) Refuge and continues into Valle d'Altafossa/Altfaßtal, until reaching the Großberghütte Refuge (1645 m). 
Descent: moderately steep during the return to Maranza
Time: 4 h 30 min.
Degree of difficulty: medium
Refreshments: Wieserhütte Refuge, Pranter-Stadel Refuge, Großberghütte Refuge

Mühlbach/Vals: Alta Via to the Fane Alpine pasture at Valles/Vals
Itinerary:

From the mountain station, to the Valles/Valser Joch Pass and the Alpe dei Campani/Schellenberg; passing the Rotenstein Alpine pasture, the trail continues to the Peachenjöchl Pass (2201 m) and the Ochsenalm Alpine pasture, and from there to the Fane Alpine pasture (1739 m - 2 h 15 min.). The return route passes through Valles along the road at the bottom of the valley. (1 h 15 min.) 
Time: 3 h 30 min.
Degree of difficulty: a good stride is required 
Refreshments: Jochtal Restaurant, Gatterer and Zingerle Refuges on the Fane Alpine pasture

RODENECK/RODENGO

Rodeneck: Alta Via Zumis/Höhenweg Zumis - St. James' Chapel - Passo delle Erbe/Würzjoch
Itinerary:
From the Zumis parking area to the Roner Refuge. Following the path marked with trail sign 2, continue to the Starkenfeld Refuge and from there along the Ast alpine pasture trail (trail sign 2) up to St. James' Chapel/Jakobsstöckl (2,026 m - 3.5 h). The carriage road (trail sign 10) leads to Colle di S. Giacomo/Jakobskopf (2,100 m), to the Wieser alpine pasture and, following the track, to the Rina pass/Glittnerjoch (2,189 m). Flanking the Rina Lake/Glittnersee we come to the Val da Lè/Turnaretschhütte Refuge (2,030 m - 1 h 30 min.). From there, the path marked with trail sign 1 leads to the Luson pass/Lüsnerjoch (2,008 m) and continues (sign 1) to the Monte Muro/Maurerberghütte Refuge (2,127 m - 1 h 15 min.). Along the carriage road we come to the Fontanella/Geweihten Wasser alpine pastures (1,869 m) and along the road to the Erbe pass (2,006 m - 1 h 15 min.).
Time: 7½ - 8½ h 
Height difference: 780 m uphill, 500 m downhill 


The high apple plateau of Naz-Sciaves/Natz-Schabs

Excursion in the sign of the apple
Starting point: Raas

Trip description:
Begin by walking in Raas on the path which bears through the orchards (red-white signposting n. 4) to the centre of Natz. Walk in the direction of Viums and right outside the village, turn to the right (white-blue signposting). Continue to walk till you arrive to the “Waldner Tor”, where you have a beautiful view to the Rodengo Castle. A forestry path bears to the village Schabs (white-blue signposting), from there to the small lake “Flötscher” (red-white signposting n. 2) and then back to Rasa through the apple orchards (red-white signposting n. 2).
If you are still fit, you can continue your excursion till Aicha. Begin by walking west from the centre of Schabs through the orchards (red-white signposting n. 8a) till you arrive to the main road, where the petrol station “Ladestatt” is situated. There starts a path (red-white signposting 8a) which bears to the hill “Ochsenbühel” and then to Aicha. To go back to Schabs take the path through the forest (red-white signposting n. 9a).
 
Natz - Brixen

Trip description:
This trial bears from Natz to Brixen. Begin by walking on the trail to Elvas (red-white signposting n. 1), then descend to the city Brixen. The trail to go back (red-white signposting n. 16) runs along the river Isarco to the Abbey of Neustift.
From there a trail (red-white signposting n. 4) bears to Raas crossing under the main road to the trail n. 8 with the red-white signposting. Then you go back to Natz on the blue-white signposted trail crossing the biotope “Raier Moos”.


Bressanone/Brixen and environs

Excursion on the Luson/Lüsen Alps with a deviation to Cima Lasta/Astjoch
Itinerary:

Take the Luson road up to the Tulperhof hotel (1,640 m). From here the path goes up (trail sign 3) to Tulper Gampis (1,806 m) and continues along the path marked with trail sign 2 to the Campoforte/Starkenfeld refuge (1,936 m) and farther to the Astalm pasture. This leads to the Einhäuser pasture (2,120 m) along the northern slope of Cima Lasta/Astjoch and, passing the eastern ridge, reaches the cross at the peak (2,194 m). The return path passes the Prato Croce/Kreuzwiesenhütte refuge, the Bacher and Plasell alpine pastures and descends to the parking area, following the path marked with trail sign 3. 
Time: 4 – 5 hours
Height difference: ca. 300 m
Degree of difficulty: easy-medium


Brixen: from Valcroce (2000 m) to Mt. Forca Grande (2574 m) via the Plose Refuge (2440 m) and Mt. Fana (2547 m)
Itinerary:

From the Plose mountain station ascend with a moderate gradient to the slopes (trail sign no. 3) up to a slumping valley and continue through the mountain pasture to a small hut above the trail (trail sign no. 3/4, part of no. 2 of the Alta Via of the Dolomites). Crossing a hilly area, reach the Plose Refuge (rest area), then continue to the east and descend to the Luson/Lüsnerjoch Pass (trail sign no. 3/4). Here the trail rises along trail sign no. 4/7 in the direction of Mt. Fana/Pfannspitze, crossing the ridge (trail no. 7, equipped with ropes) up to Mt. Forca Piccola/Kleiner Gabler. From there, with a brief trip, it reaches the rocky peak of Mt. Forca Grande/Großer Gabler (with a 360° view). For the return, descend along the southern slope (no trail) until reaching an unmarked mountain pasture path, initially heading to the west, that crosses numerous ditches to the Rossalm Alpine pasture (rest area) and then to the mountain station of the cable-way at Valcroce (rest area).

LUSON/LÜSEN

Lüsen: excursion to the most beautiful peaks of the Lüsen Alp - Valletta - Cima Lasta - Mt. Campiglio - Lake Rina - Valletta
Itinerary:

Starting from Luson by car, go to the parking lot of Valletta di Sopra/Oberflitt (about 1680 m). From there follow the forest road (trail sign no. 2) and then the wooded trail up to the Prato Croce/Kreuzwiese Refuge (1909 m - 2 hours), passing the Maurer Drei Wiesen farmstead. After the ascent to Lasta/Astjoch (2194 m), cross meadows to reach the Ellen Cross, continuing then along trail sign no. 2 up to the Campill Alpine pasture and to Mt. Campiglio/Campill (2190 m). From here descend to Valletta/Flitt or to the chapel of S. Giacomo (2026 m), passing through the old Alpine pastures, and continuing along trail sign no. 4 up to the Wieser Alpine pasture (2054 m - 2 hours). Then continue up to the Colletta/Glittner Joch Pass (trail sign no. 10), passing the Rina/Glittnersee Lakes, up to the Val da Lé/Turnaretsch Refuge (2030 m). Then, back down to Valletta crossing the mountain pasture (trail sign no. 10) reaching the parking lot passing through the Glittner stables. 
Time: 6 hours, variation with descent from Mt. Campiglio 4 h 30 min. 
Height difference: about 850 m
Degree of difficulty: easy, but a certain training level is required


Chiusa/Klausen and environs

CHIUSA/KLAUSEN

From Klausen up to St. Anne's church on Monte Villanders/Villanders along the old miners' road
Itinerary:

From the Fraghes square in Klausen take the underpass to go to the other side of the Brennero road; then pass the Fragburg residence and cross the Villanders road. This is where the miners' path/Erzweg starts and rises steeply up to the new homes and continues up to the Fuchsberger and Johannser farmsteads. Above Johannser take trail no. 3, that crosses the woods along a steep path, up to the Moar in Ums farmstead (You can take a small detour to see the menhir, a stele that was worshiped in the past). Continue along the main trail to reach St. Anne's church (1,134 m).
Time: 1 h 30 min.
Degree of difficulty: medium
Height difference: approx. 600 m

BARBIANO/BARBIAN

Barbian: excursion to Corno del Renon/Rittnerhorn (2259 m) 
Itinerary:

From the centre of Barbiano (830 m) follow red/white/red trail sign no. 3 up to the Trögler farmstead, passing the Kleinebner farmstead, and continue beyond Kaserol and the small lake, called Nixenteich, up to the Niggl Alpine pasture, on the Corno del Renon/Rittnerhorn (2259 m). To return, follow red/white/red trail sign no. 1 up to the Corno di Sotto/Unterhorn Refuge and then red/white/red trail sign no . 3A up to Pennleger, then the white/red trail sign again passing the Kuhleite and Rastall Alpine pastures, until reaching Kohlgrube a bit lower. The blue/white trail sign leads to "Katzensprung" and to the upper waterfalls, then to Stich and to Flatsch, and passing the Oberstieger farmstead up to Lukas and finally back to Barbiano.

VELTURNO/FELDTHURNS

Feldthurns: Panoramic excursion to Rodella Lake
Itinerary:

The parking area near the Caerna cross/Garner Wetterkreuz (1,410 m) leads to Monte Caerna/Garner Berg along the pedestrian path (trail sign 10). Cross the meadows of the alpine pasture to the edge of the woods and up to Monte del Pascolo/Königsanger (2,436 m) along the "Munschegg" trail. There is no path but the way is clearly marked. From Monte del Pascolo take the path marked with trail sign 7 along the Northern ridge up to the Rodella Lake/Radlsee refuge.

Height difference: 1.080 m

LAION/LAJEN

The Poststeig (mail path) from Laion/Lajen to Ortisei/Gröden via S. Peter
Itinerary:

From the Laion/Lajen town square go to the Moarhof farmstead and continue toward San Pietro/St. Peter; passing the Tantscher farmstead, the path heads toward the village of Cevas/Tschöfas. Cross the village below the church and continue along flat ground until the path enters woods above Tanirza/Tanürz. Cross the road that runs from Laion to San Pietro and leads along a narrow path to the group of houses called Felsonner; here the path returns along the provincial road to San Pietro. Then, take the Poststeig, cross the stream, turn to the left and 200 m farther, near the Federer saw mill, turn left again. Follow the narrow carriage road up to the Pedrutscher farmstead. The mail path rises gradually, crossing the massive landslide of Pontives and reaches the bottom of the maze of rocks, where it forks. One fork (via Nevel) leads to the village of Ortisei, along a steep descent; it is recommended to remain above until reaching via Mureda, that descends from the woods to the centre of Ortisei.

VILLANDRO/VILLANDERS

Villanders: excursion along the historical Path of the Miners "Erzweg" 
Itinerary:

From the town square take trail no. 4 (Chiusa) up to the Mayhof chapel, where the trail forks: take the left trail (above the bed of the Plabach River) following the trail that passes among the Taubenhaus and Oberholzer farmsteads to Hotel Sturm. Continue for a brief section along the carriage road up to the small church of San Valentino and after another 30 m on the road keep left toward the Broatnerhof farmstead. From Broatner you will reach the Johannserhof farmstead in just a few minutes, from which you can continue in the direction of Moar in Ums (or take a detour for the menhir of Villandro). Enter the fir forest and come along the forest road to the small church of sant'Anna, heading back by following trail sign no. 3.

Val di Funes/Villnösser Tal valley

From the Zannes alpine pasture in Val di Funes/Villnöß to Sass Putia (2,875 m) 
Itinerary:

From the parking area of the Zannes alpine pasture/Zanser Alm (1,680 m) enter the valley along a carriage road up to Ciancenon/Tschantschenon. After the bridge, go through the downhill winding turns (trail sign 35) up to the Gampen Malga refuge (2,062). After the meadow, the trail climbs along the rocky slope to the Genova di Poma/Schlüterhütte refuge (2,297 m - 1 h 45 min.). From there it continues up to the north following the path marked with trail sign 4 to the Poma pass/Kreuzbergsattel. After crossing the grassy slopes the path leads to Forcella Putia/Peitlerscharte (2,357 m - 45 min.). The climb continues along the steep south-eastern side up to a rocky gorge and along winding turns reaches the flat saddle close to the steep summit (2,765 m - 1 h). The trail, crossing a slope of detritus, reaches the peak at Sass Putia (2,875 m - 30 min.). To go down, return along the uphill trail to the Genova refuge and then to the Zannes parking area (3 h).

Villnöß: at the Rodella/Halsl Pass via Munt
Itinerary:

trail sign no. 11) from S. Pietro to the Vikoler chapel and then, along the road, to the Neu-Jonis Refuge and to the Putzerhof farmstead. A trail passes in front of the farmstead that turns to the right (no. 11), leads to the Palua/Plauer River and then rises to the Russis Cross/Russis Kreuz passing the Kaserboden mountain pasture. From there it continues always along the road, that rises slightly to the Rodella/Halsl Pass (watershed between Eores and Luson) and to Passo delle Erbe/Würzjoch. An alternative to the road: after the bridge over the Russis River, take the right trail that enters the forest above the escarpment and reaches the Rodella Pass.
