The chestnut

The Chestnut: sweet, healthy and low in calories

What would a true Törggelen party be without the traditional “Keschtn”? But chestnuts don’t just taste wonderful roasted, the sweetish taste of this autumn fruit also enriches home-cooked dishes.

Valle Isarco/Eisacktal valley innkeepers show us how: during the “Valle Isarco Chestnut Speciality Weeks” from the middle of October to the beginning of November everything revolves around the fruit of the bread-fruit tree. Numerous inns all along the route of the Keschtnweg, in the traditional chestnut growing area of the Valle Isarco, offer all sorts of tasty treats during this time, and all are prepared using the noble chestnut.

Not a Fattening Food

Chestnuts have a very high starch content and thus provide valuable carbohydrates, phosphorus and iron, as well as calcium, vitamin C and beta-carotene. The belief that chestnuts are a fattening food is unfounded. They are quickly filling but their fat content is minimal and they contain very few calories. Countless culinary delicacies can be conjured up with chestnuts: cream of chestnut soup, chestnut ratatouille, chestnut parfait and many more.
